MEXICO-REGION: Following Washington on Security Council seat

Mexico has decided to follow the US lead and support the candidacy of Guatemala to replace Argentina as it vacates its seat on the UN Security Council in October. This could lead to a repeat of the rough north-south regional divide which troubled the election of the secretary-general of the OAS. Venezuela is the other aspirant to Argentina's seat, but the US has been lobbying hard to block it.
